Fifteen Years of Mission, and the Imperatives That Never Change

This month, AWS GovCloud (US) turns fifteen. It launched in 2011 as the first cloud infrastructure built for U.S. government security and compliance, and has grown ever since by working backward from customer missions like simulating the Artemis II lunar flyby trajectory, delivering the first online decennial census, giving Veterans a single place to manage their benefits, and helping law enforcement rescue children faster. AWS GovCloud (US) has evolved over the past 15 years to keep customers on the leading edge of their missions, from a second region in 2018 for resiliency to FedRAMP Class D and DoD IL4/5 authorizations that let missions innovate faster. Today, the regions deliver a broad set of compliant agentic AI capabilities through Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore to provide customers freedom of model choice so the mission picks the model, never the other way around. In support of America’s AI Action Plan, Amazon is investing up to $50 billion to expand AI and HPC infrastructure for U.S. government agencies by adding capacity to scale GenAI services and HPC supercomputing workloads. Fifteen years of delivering operational excellence has turned the vision of AWS GovCloud (US) into a trusted track record. We intend to spend the next fifteen building on it.

Getting Started with Amazon Quick Agentic AI

Here's what practitioners need to know to get started with Amazon Quick's agentic AI capabilities in AWS GovCloud (US).

Amazon Quick's agentic AI capabilities are now available in AWS GovCloud (US-West), bringing an AI-powered teammate to government and regulated-industry teams. Building on the analytics and business intelligence capabilities already available in AWS GovCloud (US), Quick now turns questions into actions, helping teams drive mission-critical decisions faster without switching applications. With this launch, teams can build custom chat agents tailored to mission-specific workflows, including procurement, ATO compliance, and grants management, while keeping all data hosted and processed entirely within the AWS GovCloud (US-West) Region. Enterprise governance features are available at launch.

Access Amazon Quick. Navigate to the Amazon Quick console within your AWS GovCloud (US-West) account. Agentic AI capabilities are available immediately with no additional service activation required.

Set up Spaces for least-privilege scoping. Before building agents, configure Spaces to enforce data boundaries across your program offices and mission areas. From the Spaces menu, create a new Space and add resources including Dashboards, Topics, Knowledge bases, Actions, and File uploads. Each Space scopes information so analysts only access mission-relevant data, aligning with your existing authorization boundaries.

Connect your data sources. Amazon Quick integrates with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and OneDrive via GCC High connectors. To set up a OneDrive knowledge base, navigate to the integrations console and choose either admin-managed setup (certificate-based credentials via AWS KMS and Microsoft Entra ID) or user-managed setup (OAuth sign-in flow, completed in minutes). Select the files and folders to include using the file picker or sync options.

Build custom chat agents. Custom agents process natural language inputs and invoke tool-calling capabilities scoped to your configured connectors and Spaces. Agents respect Space-level data boundaries; an agent configured for a procurement Space cannot access data in an HR or intel Space unless explicitly granted. Administrators control which tools, data sources, and actions each agent can invoke, enforcing least-privilege at the agent level. All agent interactions are logged for audit. You can preview and test your agent as you build it.

Extend with Flows and Automations. Once your agents are operational, use Amazon Quick Flows to create shareable workflows that automate routine tasks. Describe what you need in natural language, generate flows from agent conversations, or build manually using the visual editor. For more complex processes, Amazon Quick Automate lets you create automations from natural language descriptions or document uploads, with an AI-powered assistant that generates a high-level plan you can refine.

All inference on integrated foundation models remains within the AWS GovCloud (US-West) Region, supporting FedRAMP Class D, DoD SRG IL-4/5, ITAR, CJIS, and FIPS 140-3 compliance requirements. No customer data — including queries, uploaded documents, or inference results — leaves the AWS GovCloud (US) partition boundary. Data at rest is encrypted using AWS KMS keys within your AWS GovCloud (US) account, and customer-managed keys (CMK) are supported for organizations requiring exclusive key custody.
